Every counseling situation is unique and catered to each person and their specific goals. It is standard for therapists to encourage discussion of the primary issues and concerns in your life during sessions.
Generally, we will schedule a series of weekly or bi weekly sessions, where each session lasts around fifty minutes. Therapy can be short-term, focusing on a specific issue, or longer-term, addressing more complex issues or ongoing personal growth. There may be times when you are asked to take certain actions outside of the therapy sessions, such as reading a relevant book or keeping records to track certain behaviors. It is important to process what has been discussed and integrate it into your life between sessions. For counseling to be most effective you must be an active participant, both during and between the sessions. Some things you can expect:
Compassion, respect, and understanding
Perspectives to illuminate persistent patterns and feelings
Real strategies for enacting positive change
Effective and proven techniques along with practical guidance

While there is no guarantee, studies show that people that participate in therapy have a higher success rate than those that do not, and success is generally maintained over time. The cost of having problems in relationships, addiction, and mental health can cost us so much more than just finances.
Most people find it helpful to think of therapy as an investment rather than a cost. Easy for me to say, of course, but I have seen people change in ways that they thought unimaginable. Leaving issues in place can affect your physical health, your career, the legacy you leave for your kids, and your own personal life satisfaction. I have no interest in keeping anyone longer than necessary or helpful, so we will work together to craft the best strategy for you.
